It had already been a ridiculous day, spent debating yet again the business of this 'proposed arrangement' (why they kept calling it that when half the conversation was about how there really was no choice,) why it had to happen, and how. He was tired enough at this point of rehashing this ground that he actually found himself almost wishing they could get it over with just to stop talking about it.

He didn't say that out loud, of course.

And then they told him that he was going to meet her at this ridiculous - Lord, even he found himself repetitive when he was irritated - dinner tonight. Sure, he'd make a great impression like this. He had a drink, an attempt to take the edge off that didn't really work, before hand, but he was still sure he wasn't faking a smile well when they - she - was due to arrive.

It was summer holiday, and Sybil was making the most of it. Her mother had planned for all three girls to travel to the city. Earl Grantham had to stay back, and Lady Grantham would only be around on the weekends when she could. They did bring minimal staff, choosing to rent out a suite. Mary had Anna come to tend to them, and it was decided that it would be cheaper and safer if Tom took the car for them.

Sybil had to admit she liked the idea a little more than she should, probably getting to spend more time with him than she should have. But she wanted to show him the world, all the things she was privy to. So the first week was spent mostly trying to go to places she liked, if she could claim the car first.

But come Friday when it was technically his time off, it seemed like everyone had made plans. Mary was meeting someone at the hotel for dinner, and Edith was busy with the paper. She found herself down at his door, knocking softly-- hoping Anna was also out this evening.

Sybil didn’t know what to say to that. He had changed everything. It was supposed to be easy. Her family needed the connection the Duke’s family could have provided. But it just didn’t feel right. It hadn’t for awhile now, and Sybil couldn’t live like that.

“I don’t know what my parents are going to say. Or my grandmother,” she said a little defeated. “I just didn’t want to hurt anyone. I didn’t want to feel like this.”

Tom wakes up early Christmas morning, feeling a little like a child again. It's not the frenzy of excitement from when you're very young, but the state of being so full of joy you might burst. His excitement is not so much for what's under the tree, it's about the glorious woman asleep next to him, celebrating the day with her, in their home (where he may have gotten up in the middle of the night to hang mistletoe in every doorway) has his more in the Christmas spirit than he has been in years. Although he really can't wait to see her open her gift, as well.

For now, though, he'll content himself with slipping out of bed carefully and making breakfast. He's not unaware, this is going to be a substantially different holiday than she's used to. He thinks she'll find the same joy in it that he is - it's theirs - but he's still going to do his level best to make sure today has each of the things that made it truly special when he was a kid, and the first is waking up in a house warmed from the kitchen out, smelling of good food. His pancakes are not going to be any sort of match for the ones he remembers, but they'll do, he's sure.

She knew they would have to drive farther than Ripon to be able to spend time together without it getting back to her family, but it felt different knowing this was the very last time they would have to do this. There was a small smile when he pulled up to meet her in town, already gathering a few last minute presents.

The town was all ready for Christmas, a light dusting of snow on the ground while tinsel bells and lights were strung up on every pole. She couldn't help the smile when she moved to sit in the front with him-- instead of the back. No one was around anyway.

"Hello," she said, leaning into to kiss him lightly, chancing it once in public. Soon they would be able to do without needing to duck to see if anyone else was around.

She checked her phone one more time as she used it for its flashlight feature. Coming home always seemed to be adventurous, though tonight’s dinner conversation— on Christmas Eve of all night’s was not a good one. She had at least four glasses of wine, her mother commenting on it. Sybil decided to forego after dinner conversation and precisely waited to make sure Tom had taken her grandmother home. Or maybe she had her own way home.

Sybil didn’t care. She just wanted a good holiday, and so far it was spent talking about eligible sons of Lord So and So or some Duke she couldn’t even remember now. Couldn’t she have autonomy over herself? Was this her life?

Shrugging her jacket, she caught herself on the stairs before nearly erupting in laughter. She had to quiet herself though. I mean ultimately she had asked the chauffeur to take her for takeout. No one could say anything, but it was probably improper.

But things were growing quite improper with Tom. She just didn’t care to keep it at bay this night.

  • What if instead of Matthew the next male heir was terrible and kicked the Crawleys out of Downton. They probably live on Violet’s property and maybe Tom is her chauffeur?
  • Phryne Fisher esque adventures
  • Arranged Marriages: Either Sybil is supposed to end up with some terrible Lord so and so and she ends up with Tom or Tom is Lord so and so and they clash at first but they both are philanthropists...
  • Other time periods
  • Sybil as the eldest
  • Sybil meets Tom at university instead
  • Socialist fleeing Ireland
  • Soldier, she's his nurse
  • Role Reversal

Sybil Crawley, third daughter to Lord Crawley, was far more the free spirit of any of the Crawleys, let alone her sisters. She loved her family dearly, but this day was no different than any other. She hadn’t known they hired a new chauffeur, something about the last one getting some sort of new start up in London. She didn’t know his name, and while she actually did pay mind to the people working in Downton, right now she was focused on her phone.

Mama made some comment about the modesty of her dress, and while it took all that was in her to not roll her eyes, she made a comment about it being the 21st century. Women were allowed to wear whatever they wanted.

It wasn’t until the following day that she even took note of him, other than the once over she clearly gave him the day before. It was a long ride without her mother and Edith. Her phone was proving less interesting. So instead she looked up from it and at her driver.

“You’re new, aren’t you?”

Sybil stared at her phone for a second, feeling like she was on a precipice. Everything would change now. She felt like the earth was slipping under her feet. Right now it was still the same, but the moment she stepped off the train it would all change. She took the moment to feel it, to feel her life as it was in this moment.

And then it was gone. The train had stopped; people milling out of the open doors. She smiled to herself, the nerves she felt bristling also urged her onward. Grabbing her duffel bag for the short trip home, Sybil was ready for this. She stepped onto the platform and started to look for him.

And there he was, in the uniform of the household. He looked as handsome as ever. And he seemed to spot her, too. She just watched him for a moment before stepping forward like seeing a long lost lover. “Hello, Tom,” she said, her smile illuminating the rest of her face.

Despite himself, and what Sybil says, Branson always feels a little awkward when he comes to see her on her campus. It’s a proper – and expensive – university and, even though he despises himself for the thought, there is always a voice in the back of his head raising the possibility that today, they won’t allow him in.

That alone he could deal with, but the mix of that and the swell of excitement at seeing her, well. He usually ends up having to take a moment to stand there, mock himself for how bad he’s got it. More than ever, he doesn’t understand why it’s phrased like that. There’s nothing bad about this.

He arrives a bit earlier than they’d agreed on, intentionally, wanting to get a sense of the crowd and the energy beforehand. It’s not a small turnout, at this point, but the air feels calm, determined. It helps settle him, at least, until he sees her walking towards him, and then he is giddy again.
